After Even a Birch Can Be Real, A+B Contemporary Art presents the second exhibition of a three collective project that involves the same three artists in exhibitions different by title, concept and works.

Even a Birch Can Be Real indicates the focus on the three authors research regarding the real, considering however the different specificities of each interest. Urban scenery is the field where Simon Laureyns acts, Niccolò Morgan Gandolfi favours natural landscape, and Silvia Hell operates through the construction of languages aimed at developing knowledge and visualization of a neighborhood made up of people, concepts, rules and narratives.
Slash puts a fractured narrative, a break that refers either to the exhibition triptych and to what heppens during the production of the works on display. The purpose is to show the frame when something becomes something else in order to be what it truly is.
Living up to that background recounted by Even a Birch Can Be Real, Slash focuses its attention on the passage of reality elements within the artistic practice, answering questions concerning the methods and motives of each research.

With Apoteòṡi  Marco La Rosa investigates the hidden possibilities of objects created for a constructive and necessary function. The works, made of lead and concrete casting, appear as landmark between material naturalness and reality origin.

The artist has produced two new series of works for this second solo show by A + B. The works arise like mold of building materials: bricks and water pipes. The vacuum is necessary and is managed punctually and hidden technics. Marco La Rosa has investigated the emptiness as the unknown, working with mergers and withdrawals, without paying attention to volumetric proportions or disguising relationships as real data.

Marco La Rosa centers his sculptural practice in the process leading to the production and to the appearance of images and shapes. The artist focuses on the organic nature of materials, he frees them within wrappers and he returns them thanks to the vitality that characterizes them.

Three group shows over one year, the same three artists, Simon Laureyns, Silvia Hell and Niccolò Morgan Gandolfi, always in the same place. The first show, Even a Birch Can Be Real is opening on Saturday, December 19^th, at AplusB Contemporary Art, Brescia. In this way the project is testing a different repetition of an exhibition scheme.

“A group show always runs the risk of providing a univocal, arbitrary and partial view of the artists’ work”, so the project’s curator Gabriele Tosi, “starting such a process, we hope to respect the complexity of the individual research and to convey the potential of the available resources at best”.

The artists involved are Niccolò Morgan Gandolfi (Washington D. C., 1983 – Lives in Bologna), Silvia Hell (Bolzano, 1983 – Lives in Milan) and Simon Laureyns (Ghent, 1979 – Lives in Ghent) – this will be his first show in Italy. Never have they exhibited together. Their artistic education, their research, their manners are different; though they are linked both from a strong attention towards what affects reality’s perception and the ways to experience the world, and from the ability of synthesize the stratification of their attitudes in one piece of art or in a series of works.

“I brought Gandofi, Hell and Laureyns together”, states Tosi, “because I’m persuaded that the complexity and the variety of the visual and perception systems resulting from the three shows may mirror an idea of art which is free from the purpose of supporting one kind of artistic research over the others, but still represents a privileged medium to look at the aesthetic potential of what surrounds us, by relating us to the different dimensions of the world, to their fullness of substance and meaning”.

The works of Even a Birch Can Be Real come from the artists’ ateliers, where they were chosen since they are emblematical of the physical and mental contexts they investigated.

The project is continuing with the second and third show in May and September, 2016.

57°38’53”N 10°24’22”E is the current location of Rabjerg Mile, the biggest shifting sand dune in Northern Europe, located near Skagen, in Denmark. Nazarena Poli Maramotti chose this natural phenomenon as a metaphor of the continuous evolution of her painting towards a new direction of her research, highlighted in this new series of paintings where the artist creates and develops an idea of landscape, overcoming it. This is her second solo show at A+B Contemporary art in Brescia.

A+B gallery presents the second solo show by the american painter Osamu Kobayashi composed by a new and coherent series of painings. The writer Paul D’Agostino says on his text “Sharable Joys in the Paintings of Osamu Kobayashi”: “It is in his very operative motion, in his ostensibly slow, meditative pictorial gesture, that a careful viewer begins to perceive, in the exquisite works of the young American painter Osamu Kobayashi, a fervid sense of joy that is not merely formal, chromatic and compositional, but also procedural, inherent and material.”

Martini breaks down the gestural continuity of the creative act in the painting, experimenting different ways, times and materials in his multi-phase works. His paintings are like stratified visual fields, deeply marked by the perseverant need to deny a planned result, strongly decked to find the unexpected potential of complex, precarious and unique material conditions. His research celebrates many substantial features of painting but makes symbolic and narrative attention become redundant.

Many and different procedures are to be found on the space described on the frame. Through the artist’s action, the colorful matter creates various transformations because of its physical and chemical features. Simultaneously, work time and space are somehow recorded on the artwork, whose almost absorbent nature can potentially be sediment of bordering matters and gestures.

The ludic rawness of this inclination intensifies the character of the compositional elements. The weight of the canvas could spread out the color, as much as gravity could play a significant role in creating the shapes in which the matters solidifies. Fleeing from what is said and repeated, the painter himself takes somehow distances from his work and becomes an instrument of it. Like a film director who leaves the supervision of the movie to become an operator and decides to manage the operations when a new amount of arbitrariness is needed in order to proceed.

The series of works at A+B are a complete collection of the new ways Martini has been experimenting recently and they confirm that functional aspect. He spreads a conspicuous amount of acrylic color on the frame of the canvas. He then lifts, turns, stretches out and presses on a plastic surface on the ground the various parts, like big matrixes for monotypes. When the acrylic is supposed to be dry – Martini never waits enough to be sure about it – he affixes every part on the front side and tears off the plastic surface. The quality of the rip, cautious or violent, defines the volume of the surface of the painting and creates final tactile and light features.

The result of these procedures depend on countless variables, such as time, weight, humidity, the conditions of the implied materials, the dust in the studio. The artist is passive in front of these. His duty and his interest are not to limit these possibilities. Even if he practically manages the structure of the work, his “mistakes”, such as the trace of shoes or a hair that have been absorbed in the artwork, are part of a language that reports the amount of reality he wants to reach, without any direct intervention.

The painter’s approach hides the visual culture that created the works. Martini did not give up his manner, his manual skill and his presence, although he does not accept to be harmoniously and linearly guided by the matter. He is the one who compresses it, moves and mixes it according to his feelings, but lets it pour out itself until he senses it is time for a new intervention.

With these works, Martini shows his intention to paint without explanations or excuses. He puts himself in a very traditional way of thinking against the risk of trying to exhibit paintings and end up exhibiting themselves. (GT)

A+B is delighted to present “Bobbi”, an exhibition by Stephanie Stein and Tobias Hoffknecht, two artists who mainly use sculpture and installation. “Bobbi” features a new work titled “O-Ton”, 2015 created by the merging of the two different researches of the artists. The exhibition space will be transformed thanks to a total transparency of the majestic of the wall sculpture.
